HOW TO SPEND A WEEK IN MENORCA
A stroll through Mahón’s historic centre and port
A stroll through Mahón’s city centre is the best way to get to know the city and discover some of its most emblematic sites. Walk through streets until you reach the Plaza del Príncipe and the Plaza de la Conquista where you’ll find:
- La Iglesia de Santa María: A neo-gothic church with a 19-century spectacular organ that offers concerts throughout the year.
- El Mercado de Pescados. Much more than a market: in addition to fish and fresh, local seafood, you’ll be able to try tapas, wines and local products from Menorca.
Going down the Costa de Ses Voltes, you’ll reach Puerto de Mahón, the second largest port in Europe. The boardwork connects the port to the city; stroll along it to enjoy an incomparable panoramic view of the Mediterranean.
Visita la Cala Galdana
30 minutes by car from Ciutadella and Mahón is Cala Galdana, a beach with clear water, perfect for spending the morning in the sun with family. Cala Galdana is also one of the best places to practise water sports; you can rent kayaks or a paddleboard and visit the nearby Calas Mitjana, Macarella and Macarelleta. These are two calm coves with less action, visit them if you’re looking to relax. You can also access Macarella and Macarelleta on foot in 40 minutes and discover a beautiful paradise on the shores of the Mediterranean.
Sunset and Dinner in Ciutadella
There’s nothing more beautiful than going to the Mirador del Pont d’en Gil to watch the sunset. It’s a natural rock arch that enters the water; you can also swim around it and watch the incredible sunset. At night, go down to the Puerto de Ciutadella to have dinner at S’Amarador or El Balear. You’ll be able to enjoy seafood at an unbeatable location with sea views and the Mediterranean breeze.
Es Mercadal: Discover a Charming Village
El Mercadal is, without a doubt, one of Menorca’s prettiest cities. On Thursday evenings in summer, you’ll find the Mercado de Verano, a popular, artisanal fair with food that leaves neighbours and visitors alike pleased. And if you love a good view, you can head to the top of Monte Toro on bicycle, on foot or by car from Es Mercadal; if you’re lucky and it’s a clear day, you’ll be able to see Mallorca. In addition, just 20 minutes in the car and you’ll reach Cala Pregonda, a beach with thick, golden sand with a colourful landscape. Do you want more? Right next door you’ll find Binimel·là, with its red sand that offers more peace and quiet.
Brunch in One of Ciutadella’s Best Places
To start the day off on a good foot, head to Ciutadella and have breakfast at Imperi, a staple of Plaza del Born, central and famous for its ‘llonguets’ (artisanal bread). If you prefer a vegan option, Nibs is a place that specialises in brunch with a varied and healthy menu. For those that seek a more unique atmosphere, Ulisses is located in the Plaza del Mercado and offers fresh seafood from the area.
Try the caldereta de langosta (lobster stew) in Fornells
Just half an hour's drive from Mahón you will find Fornells, a town famous for having the best lobster stew on the island. You can't miss this typical Menorcan dish; in addition, the port of Fornells and its dining area is full of establishments where you can taste top-quality seafood products. We recommend places like Sa Llagosta or Es Port; you can also try the best meats at Ca Na Marga or a wide variety of local products at Jordi's.
Favaritx Lighthouse
In the northeast corner of Menorca is the Favàritx lighthouse, located on the cape of the same name. There are many reasons to visit this area; it stands out for its greyish slate landscape, which many people liken to a lunar landscape. It is incomparable with the rest of Menorca's views and is a perfect spot to observe the moon clearly in the middle of the night. Nearby, you will find beautiful, untouched coves such as Cala Tortuga, accessible by bus.
